Yeelen (Brightness) is an award-winning period costume film by Malian director Souleymane Cisse. Set in medieval Mali, the film follows the travels of Nianankoro, a youth from the Bambara ethnic group. Fleeing from his dangerous sorcerer father, Nianankoro passes into Peul (Fulani) territory. The hungry and desperate young man, not understanding the language of the Fulani, is arrested for stealing. But his knowledge of magic soon gains him the favor of the Peul king who eventually grants him a Peul wife.|
Having proven his ability through supernatural feats done in the service of the Peul king, Nianankoro returns to challenge his powerful father...
