Pet Sins April 2001 Issue
Racial trends in American Animation

In the last issue, we took a brief look at race and gender in animated films from Western countries through individual film reviews. In this issue, we will explore larger trends that occur in a variety of American cartoons (both TV series and movies).

While some irate viewers take issue with racial and gender stereotypes in children's animated films, others say, "What's the big deal? It's just a cartoon. It's harmless."

It is precisely when bigoted ideas are disguised as harmless entertainment that they gain easiest access to the mind.
